Reservoir Media has joined the growing list of music rightsholders taking legal action against AI companies. The firm filed lawsuits against both Suno and Anthropic on the same day, citing the unauthorized use of over 1,050 songs, including works by artists such as Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, and Madonna.
Beyond standard copyright infringement claims, the lawsuits also accuse the AI companies of circumventing access controls and removing essential copyright-management information from the musical works. This strategy aims to address not just the training of models, but the technical methods used to ingest protected content.
The Independent Music Publishers International Forum (IMPF) has publicly supported Reservoir's legal action, aligning with their broader AI Charter. These lawsuits represent a significant push by independent publishers to ensure that AI companies respect intellectual property rights and provide fair compensation to creators.
